What Do I Do When My Spouse Doesnt Want Me To Make Changes - Kathy Caprino
What Do I Do When My Spouse Doesnt Want Me To Make Changes Welcome to Episode #7 of my weekly video blog Work You Love! Today, Im addressing Evelyns question about how to handle an unsupportive spouse who resists your making the changes you long to in your career. Evelyn asks: âI want career coaching now, however my husband is not a supporter. Im at a point where I want to start and own my own business but he is very risk averse and doesnt want to intentionally gamble with the idea. I am in a rut, Im exhausted and I want to get re-energized and once again know that the work I do matters or offers me satisfaction. I am a middle manager in my career but also a wife, mother, community leader, active church member who feels like her job is sucking the life out of her. My husband thinks because of the uncertainty of times I should be happy I have a job that pays 6 figures, and I appreciate that, but I know that if I dont figure out my career, reinvent myself or do something Im going to burn out completely and my career reputation will be ruined. Do you have any pointers that would help me convince my husband to believe you could help me improve my career outlook and pull me back from the edge of career suicide. He thinks itâs a waste of our hard earned money for no real gain.â Heres my take: The key messages from todays post are: 1) Dont try to convince your spouse. Just communicate powerfully, authoritatively, and masterfully that you cant continue the way you are. Share in a compelling way that its time to make some form of positive change, and youd like his/her support to do it. But remember you dont need permission to take control of your life. 2) Figure out how important this career shift is to you now. If its critical, prioritize it highly, and do what it takes to create the changes you long for. 3) Remember you dont have to risk everything to bring about the shifts you need to be happier in your career. Heres a tweetable for you: CLICK TO TWEET: Become the master of your own ship. Donât let others dictate what you need, and what you can have. @kathycaprino #WorkYouLove Itâs up to you â" no one can do this for you. Does your spouse support you in making the changes you desire in life and work? How do you handle it? Share your candid thoughts below. Tips For Categorizing Categorized Information
Tips For Categorizing Categorized InformationFor the layman, clerical resume writing can be very confusing. There are a lot of things to consider when doing this kind of writing. In the past, there weren't that many options for clerical resume writing, and it used to be that you'd get an outline with the specific job details. Nowadays, though, it's been done much differently. When writing a resume you want to make sure that your resume is strong. This means that it should focus on what you've done for your current employer, how you'll be useful to them, and what they're looking for. You also want to focus on your skills and qualifications as a potential employee. The best way to do this is to write your resume by taking notes. All you need is a free software like Notepad or Word that can store all of your information. Once you know the general job titles you'll be applying for, use that to help you write your resume. You can write it in bullet points, or just write it all out.One of th e most important things to consider when writing a resume is to keep it to one page. A lot of people have to cram a lot of information into one page. Using free software is always a good idea, but when you do use the software it needs to be one page. Doing it on two or three pages will be far too hard to read.Once you've written out your information, then all you need to do is format it so that it's easier to read. When you're formatting it in Notepad or Word, you can start with the header, or what is known as the title bar, on the left side of the page. It should say the name of the company, your name, your current position, your current employer, and any other information that you think might be of help to your prospective employer. Then you can put down the summary, which will tell the reader a little bit about you and your career. When you have all of your information in your free software, then you can just take down what you wrote and move it onto your blank sheet of paper. Aga in, Notepad or Word works best, but you don't have to use one of those programs. The important thing is that you have a way to type your information into.Your resume isn't the only way that employers need to see your work history. They may want to see examples of your past work. There are many different samples that they may need to look at, and the samples are just that: examples. If you have a computer, printer, and paper, then you can go ahead and write your resume, and submit it to employers as soon as possible. If you don't have a computer or printer, you can use a notepad or Word program, which can be found online. Try not to worry about spelling or grammar, because it will all come with practice. Once you get the hang of this, it will come much more naturally.

Late For An Interview Heres How To Keep Your Momentum - Work It Daily
Late For An Interview Heres How To Keep Your Momentum - Work It Daily Are you ready to get HIRED? Picture this: you land an interview (or second or third). You put your best interview outfit together the night before. Youâve made multiple copies of your resume, and youâve researched the heck out of your dream company. But in spite of all this, you end up running behind... Or worse, you miss your interview time completely. (Psst! Canât get hired? Watch this free tutorial.) If youâre late for an interview, you might find your confidence rattled or feel that all of your hard work and EVERYTHING you rehearsed just went swiftly down the drain. But all is not lost. Here are a few strategies to help you stay motivated in the event youâre late for an interview: 1. Donât blow it off. This should be common sense, but you might feel the urge to ghost your interviewer (meaning, blow off the interview completely). Whatever you do, DONâT do this. You will burn a bridge and risk putting your reputation in jeopardy. You donât know who you interviewer is connected to, and angry people talk A LOT, so do what you can to avoid becoming the hot topic. Even if youâre running late or youâve completely missed your window of opportunity, your interviewer will ALWAYS appreciate any form of communication to make them aware of any updates or last minute changes. Donât forget, your interviewer or recruiter has a busy schedule, too, and can likely change your interview time. When you get in touch with your interviewer, you keep: your sanity, a door open for another interview or potential job offer, and motivation in your job search. Tip: Contact your interviewer by phone (preferred contact). If they canât be reached, leave a message, and follow up through email. Keep it brief, remain professional, and apologize. 2. Avoid begging for mercy, and ask forgiveness. Once you are able to reschedule your appointment or arrive later than the scheduled time, remember to apologize, but donât go overboard in your apology. If you dwell too much on the obvious or find yourself apologizing excessively, you can derail the interview even more, which can make things awkward or increase tension in the air. Itâs best to apologize, avoid making excuses, express gratitude, and move on. 3. Shut down your inner negative Nancy. Whatever you do, focus on what you rehearsed. Highlight your strengths and the value that only you can bring the company. Go over the crucial details (or selling points) of your job experience and make the interview a two-way street. This means establishing an ask and answer flow. Youâll feel a lot more comfortable once you get your interviewer talking, and youâll feel a lot more motivated as you answer your interview questions. Tip: Prepare engaging questions to ask your interviewer. If youâre late for an interview, it might be best to jump to more complex questions that show youâve done your research and have ideas to grow the company. We hope youâre feeling a little more at ease in the event things donât go as planned. Looking for more interview tips? Little Things that Make a Big Difference in your Job Search - Your Career Intel
Little Things that Make a Big Difference in your Job Search - Your Career IntelAs an executive recruiter, its my job to facilitate advantageous hiring practices. This means leid only finding the best candidates for the job, but also ensuring that prospective hires present themselves to their best advantage during the bewerberinterview process. Ive noticed that many talented job seekers even those who take seriously the demands of interviewing neglect small details that are both important and revealing to employers, and thereby hurt their chances of success. To make the best impression on hiring managers, take these eight details seriously.Be on alert modeOnce you have started your job hunt and your resume is in the hands of potential employers or executive recruiters, you should be easily accessible. Imagine this A busy Human Resources associate emails five people to set up interviews. Four of them respond right away, but one is on vacation, or rarely checks his or her email. Most l ikely, by the time the fifth person responds, HR has already arranged the four interviews and left the slow-poke in the trash pile. Here are some specific alert ideas to consider You may be of the text me, dont e-mail me generation. However, your employer is, most likely, not from that generation. The email address listed on your resume should be checked often throughout the day. Provide only your cellphone number on your resume. You dont want a hiring manager or recruiter leaving a message for you at 900 a.m. at home if you wont get the message until the end of the day.Record a businesslike voicemail greetingIf you sound un-businesslike in your voicemail greeting yes, this includes hey guys, you know the drill employers will think twice before leaving a message. Your greeting should state your first and last personenname and invite the caller to record a message in a clear, assertive, and warm tone.Choose a professional email addressSimilar to voicemail greetings, your email addre ss is often an employers first impression of you. If your email address is a holdover from your youth, like glittergrrrrrl1234, its time to update to an address that features your full name as clearly as possible.Proofread your resumeNothing condemns your application to the reject pile faster than a sloppy resume. Typos, spelling errors, and verb tense mistakes show hiring managers that youre not detail-oriented and dont care about how you present yourself at work. While spell-check will catch most errors, sometimes even correctly spelled words are grammatically incorrect. Solution Proofread your resume twice, and ask a friend to do so also.Dont take advantageIf you are lucky enough to be invited to an on-site interview, your visit might include a hotel stay. Stay away from the mini-bar, the in-room phone, and room service billed to the room. If prospective employers feel that youve taken advantage of their hospitality, they will be less than impressed.Be polite to everyoneMany empl oyers have told me that they judge whether a new hire would be a good cultural fit by the way he or she treats the receptionist. Hotel front desk staff, receptionists, and other administrative employees often have a direct line to the hiring manager, and will report unbecoming behavior.Perfect a firm handshakeA limp, non-committal handshake makes a terrible impression. Its as simple as that. Female hiring managers in particular have told me that weak handshakes are alienating it gives the impression that either you are overly intimidated, or dont respect the other person as an equal. Shake hands warmly and confidently, with a big smile.Practice eye contactYour interviewer is evaluating the level of eye contact you maintain. Poor eye contact suggests that you are not listening, or that you are so nervous that you cant engage with others in the room. The day you send out your first resume should be the day you start practicing eye contact. Make eye contact with everyone you encounter. Ask your spouse or friend to have a 30-minute conversation with you about any subject, and practice maintaining eye contact. Once this has become a habit, then you will be able to focus much better on the interview questions themselves. These details may seem trivial, but they are far more consequential than most people think. Refining these aspects of your self-presentation can help you make a strong impression throughout the interview process. What neglected details do you notice among potential hires? What self-presentation tips can you share?

Study Finds Womens Earning Potential Peaks At 35
Study Finds Womens Earning Potential Peaks At 35 We like to think that the glass ceiling is shattering and in some ways it is. When entering the workforce, women are earning just as much if not mora than their male counterparts. Where pay discrepancy still shows up is with mid- or senior-level professionals. A recent study in the UK found that once women hit 35 their male peers start earning considerably more than they do. What is even more disheartening is that gap widens every year. According to the study, by the time a woman hits 40 her male counterpart is earning about $2.50 more per hour. One might look at these figures and assume its because men end up moving on to careers in fields with higher earning potentials. However, that doesnt appear to be the case. Women over 40 were paid on average 35% less than men who have the same role across positions in a variety of sectors. So why is there this pay discrepancy between women and men as they hit their career stride? One explanation is that women tend to perform better at school and are more likely to pursue higher education immediately following high school than men. This factors into women earning more when it comes to entry level positions. What accounts for this flip in pay scale mid-career? One hypothesis is that employers still tend to give a higher percentage of raises, bonuses and promotions to male employees even though that may be due to unconscious bias. At some companies women sense a stigma towards them even if they return to work after having a baby. There can also be perceptions that new moms arent as ambitious or dedicated to their careers as they were pre-parenthood.Is there a way to solve this mid and senior level pay inequity? Many experts believe the key to solving this problem is for employers to allow more flexibility in the workplace to parents. This isnt just about allowing moms to have more control over their schedules. True equality means allowing fathers more paternal leave and reign over their hours so the parental responsibilities can be shared. Studies have shown that working moms earning potentials tend to continue to increase when their partners are able to take benefits like paternity leave. In some countries strides are being taken in this direction. Many European countries offer paid paternity leave, and countries that offer significantly more time off for new parents allow partners the flexibility to split that time between each other. While the United States doesnt mandate that paid parental leave needs to be given and protected maternity leave is only twelve weeks under FMLA, more companies are jumping on board with the notion of not just offering job-protection during maternity leave, but also fully-paid maternity leave. The Fairygodboss community has crowdsourced maternity leave benefits at thousands of companies and our members have named almost 100 companies that offer well above the 12 weeks voreingestellt unpaid maternity leave required under FMLA . Law firms appear to be leading the charge with some firms such as Orrick, Herrington Sutcliffe and Debevoise Plimpton offering upwards of 20 weeks maternity leave. Companies in the technology industry also appear to be generous in their policies. Netflix just announced unlimited maternity leave, Microsoft announced a 20 week maternity leave, and youll see in our database that Google is reported to give 18 weeks, Instagram 17 and Facebook, Yahoo, LinkedIn and Pinterest all offer 16 weeks. While its great to see more organizations improving their policies when it comes to parental leave, its unfortunate that pay equality doesnt seem to continue for so many women past their mid thirties. However knowing what benefits to look for and finding companies that will allow you the flexibility you need can help you stay ahead of the curve on benefits that amount to pretty important compensation.Fairygodboss is committed to improving the workplace and lives of women.Join us by reviewing your employer
